SIFCO Industries, Inc. - Our History
In 1913, five entrepeneurs joined to form a new company dedicated to applying relatively new
scientific principles to improve the physical properties of metals through thermal cycles. Because
improved steel was its main product, the company was named The Steel Improvement Company.
Just three years later, this small company merged with its neighbour,The Forest City Machine
Company, a manufacturer of pole line hardware for power transmission lines. Since the major
manufacturing process for this product was forging, the merger added forging capability to the
heat treating company which was then renamed The Steel Improvement and Forge Company.
In 1969, the corporate name was changed to SIFCO Industries, Inc. and currently is listed on the
AMEX under SIF.
Due to the fact that the company possessed expertise in the technology necessary to forge
special alloys and produce complex geometric shapes to precision tolerances, SIFCO became a
logical supplier to the developing aviation industry.
From there the company grew under the strong leadership provided by both Charles H. Smith
and Charles H. Smith Jr. SIFCO is now established as a world-wide company whose technical
expertise is only matched by its quality of product. SIFCO has come through the tough times
of history, and continues to adapt to ever-changing market challenges.
