The rapid progress of the aviation industry in Cleveland was due to the pioneers (designers, manufacturers, pilots) who doggedly pursued their goal of bigger, better and safer airplanes. SIFCO is proud to be a part of that great heritage.

Steel Improvement, of course, always had an interest in the air races because almost every plane involved contained forgings made in Cleveland. In 1948 Steel Improvement sponsored one of the top women pilots in the world, Betty Skelton, in an aerobatic demonstration. The following year, the company sponsored Tommy Boyd in the Bat Wing Parachute Jump.
