The General Electric turbosupercharger was ideally suited to strategic bombers flying at high altitudes on long-range missions. This was the key to the Air Corps bombing strategy during World War II and all four-engine bombers were fitted with them. For example, there were four on each B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator and eight on each B-29 Super Fortress.

B-24 Liberator - A multi- functional plane used as a bomber transport, for Navy reconnaissance and antisubmarine warfare. Four turbosuperchargers were used on each. 18,188 were produced, more than any other American aircraft of World War II.

World War II and the wartime economy stimulated Cleveland's war-related industries. In 1943 an aircraft industry publication, Aerosphere, listed no fewer than 189 firms in the area that contributed to the aviation parts industry, reportedly furnishing 25% of the wartime needs of the nation's aircraft industries.
