The General Electric turbosupercharger was ideally suited to strategic bombers flying at high altitudes on long-range missions. This was the key to the Air Corps bombing strategy during World War II and all four-engine bombers were fitted with them. For example, there were four on each B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator and eight on each B-29 Super Fortress.

World War II and the wartime economy stimulated
Cleveland's war-related industries. In 1943 an aircraft
industry publication, Aerosphere, listed no fewer than 189
firms in the area that contributed to the aviation parts
industry, reportedly furnishing 25% of the wartime needs
of the nation's aircraft industries.
