The Lockheed "Lighting" P-38 was a low-wing monoplane
with tricycle retractable landing gear and flaps. The fuselage was all metal
monocoque with metal cantilever wings. Power was supplied by 2 Allison engines,
utilizing 2 GE Turbosuperchargers, and capable of 1150 hp and equipped with
Curtiss 3-bladed propellers. The Germans called it "Der Gabelschwanz"
(forked-tailed devil). Between 1940 and 1945, 9923 were built. In April
1943, a P-38G shot down the aircraft carrying Admiral Yamamoto, mastermind
of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. |
