During these early years of Steel Improvement's formation, investors in the city of Cleveland were involved in negotiations which would profoundly affect the future of the company.

C. H. Smith, Sr. was born in 1887 in Poland, Ohio. He earned his degree in metallurgy from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1909 and began his career with the Ladish Company in Wisconsin. He was then tapped by ALCOA to start their first forging shop on a contractual basis. While General Manager at ALCOA, he was approached by the directors of Steel Improvement to come on board as Sales Manager.

Bracket (as shown in a 1930's brochure) was formerly made as several separate sections. Steel Improvement developed it as a single unit into a stronger and more reliable part.
