Chapter 13: SIFCO Leadership

The first President (as recounted in Chapter 1 of Volume 1) was Charles Henry Smith, Sr. He served as President from 1925 until his untimely death in December 1942. Mr. Smith, Sr. was responsible for instituting the company's enduring philosophy of learning and using the latest technologies in order to keep customers satisfied.

Charles H. Smith, Jr. took over the Presidency in January 1943 after the death of his father. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy in 1942. He also served as Chairman & CEO of the company until 1983 and presently continues as Chairman of the Board. Among the milestones of his tenure were the company's name change to SIFCO Industries, Inc. on February 1, 1969, and on September 2, 1969, the company went public and stock was first traded on the American Stock Exchange. Mr. Smith has been an active participant in many civic groups, including serving as Chairman of the Board of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce and Employer Delegate to the International Labor Organization. Among many of the honors received throughout his career, he was voted one of America's Ten Outstanding Young Men by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1955, and in 1979 he was International Executive of the Year.
Aubrey C. Milnes served as President of the company from 1970 to 1976 and then Vice Chairman. He also served on the Board of Directors until his retirement in 1978. During World War II, Mr. Milnes came to the United States as a representative from Bristol Airplane Company in England at the time when Steel Improvement was manufacturing forgings for several of Bristol's airplanes. In 1947, Mr. Milnes returned to Steel Improvement as Chief Engineer to start his 31-year career with SIFCO.
