Chapter 12: SIFCO Selective Plating

In addition to the facilities of the Forge and Turbine Component Services Group, SIFCO makes available a fast, cost-effective method for resizing, rebuilding and resurfacing metal components. The SIFCO Process of selective electrofinishing can be used to plate, anodize and electropolish without using an immersion tank. Beginning in the 1960s, this versatile process has been used in thousands of repair and OEM applications over a wide range of industries, including aerospace and aircraft.
Coatings for corrosion protection, increased wear resistance, improved electrical conductivity, enhanced lubrication, increased hardness or improvement of adhesive bonds are used on aircraft components and applied by immersing them in large tanks. These components are subject to wear and tear, so refinishing is often necessary. Sometimes the part can be disassembled and sent to a plating shop for repair without too much difficulty. Other times, it can be impractical. This is where the SIFCO Process is a perfect solution. For example, damage can easily occur to the anodized coatings on aircraft skins. The cost to disassemble, strip, reanodize and reassemble is prohibitive. Selectively anodizing the area without removing the part from the aircraft is much more cost-effective. Brush plating and anodizing operations are portable and can be performed anywhere. Adhesion requirements of federal and military specifications are easily met.
