By the late 1970s, airlines were aware of Custom's reputation for expertise with airfoil machining. They were therefore asked to undertake repairs to certain critical components used in commercial jet engines. Repair procedures were worked out and approvals obtained from the FAA and engine builders. As an airline tore down an engine for inspection, any questionable parts for which Custom had an approved repair procedure were shipped to the plant for repairs. Soon Custom was doing work for 25 or 30 different airlines and, utilizing its aircraft jet engine repair technology, had secured a share of the stationary gas turbine engine component repair and modification market. The need for a satellite plant became obvious. It was decided to build a facility in Tampa, Florida, and in October of 1982, SIFCO Turbine Component Services opened.

The first stage nozzle guide vanes are subject to temperature extremes which can cause warping, cracking, corrosion and metal loss as pictured here. | ![]() |
