SIFCO Forge Group - Processes

Other metalworking and inspection processes complement the forging of advanced materials at SIFCO. Some examples of these are:

  • Heat-treatment
  • Cryogenic treatment
  • CNC machining
  • Etching
  • Chemical milling
  • Pickling
  • Magnetic particle inspection
  • Fluorescent penetrant inspection
  • High speed CNC die-sinking

The heat-treatment department, certified by the National Aerospace and Defence Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP), includes 15 furnaces. The largest computerized furnace provides state of the art capabilities, with a working zone of six feet by twenty feet and is equipped with two manipulators. This complex furnace can meet stringent mechanical property requirements through the use of four cooling options:

1. Still air
2. Rapid fan cooling
3. Quench in 9000 gallons of agitated polymer
4. Quench in 12000 gallons of agitated water

This fully computerized unit provides solution heat-treatment, annealing, stress relieving, normalizing, austenitising, precipitation treating and tempering of components.
